Beaver DT in trouble with the law

THE BEAVERS' OFFSEASON received an unwelcome jolt with reports that DT Castro Masaniai has been arrested and suspended indefinitely.

Castro Masaniai was booked into Benton County Jail Saturday on charges of kidnapping II, Coercion, disorderly conduct, harassment and criminal mischief II according to a report in the Oregonian. Another report by KVAL offered some details -- Sgt. Jim Zessin with the Corvallis Police told the station that Masaniai tried to force his girlfriend into a car at the downtown Corvallis McDonald's restaurant, and there was a verbal argument. A witness saw it happen, and called police.

Zessin said the woman was uninjured. A charging decision is likely to be made on Monday according to Benton County DA John Haroldson. The kidnapping charge apparently was in reference to Masaniai either trying to pull his girlfriend out of the restaurant or trying to push her into the car. There has been no statement of what occurred from either Masaniai or Oregon State, however.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3:45 in the afternoon. Oregon State said Masaniai, whose bail was set at $177,500 according to booking documents, has been suspended indefinitely. Mike Riley was out of town and not available for immediate comment.

Masaniai's potential absence could be a blow to the Beavs. He missed all of spring football while rehabbing a shoulder injury. He was expected to challenge for a starting job or at the very least, provide quality depth off the bench in rotation on the inside of the d-line.

Kevin Frahm and Dominic Glover came out of the spring looking like the DT starters. Andrew Seumalo was the 'first guy off the bench' this spring and also got in some reps with the 1s.
