Beavs rally for regional playoff win

THE LATE SEASON slump that had afflicted the Beavs appeared to have followed them into the postseason. Coming to bat in the fifth inning, Oregon State trailed 4-0 to Arkansas Little-Rock and had looked listless. But the Beavs rallied big-time over the next two frames, not only tying things up but taking a 5-4 lead at the end of the sixth. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

The bats came alive, as Oregon State won their regional playoff opener 7-4. Ryan Barnes had three hits and Danny Hayes and Garrett Nash each homered.

The win sets up a 6 p.m. PT matchup in the four-team regional with No. 2 Creighton Saturday night. UALR will play No. 3 Georgia in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m.

OSU finished with 12 hits off Arkansas-Little Rock's Travis Henke and Garret Graziano, who took the loss after allowing five hits and three runs in 2 1/3 innings. He is 6-10 this season.

The Beavers (39-17) pulled ahead for good with three runs in the sixth when Hayes hit a solo home run, Bell doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Garrett Nash homered in the eighth to cap off the scoring.

Scott Schultz came on in relief of James Nygren in the fifth and picked up the win to improve to 4-0 this season. The right-hander walked two and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings.

Tony Bryant threw a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the season.
