2:00 – Stretching, QB's warm-up arms
2:15 – Special teams work (punt coverage)
2:20 – WRs break off and begin drills, RBs and QBs break off and work on handoff exchange. The rest of the team continued working on special teams, particularly field goal protection. Projected starting kicker Trevor Romaine booted a 46-yard field goal.
2:30 – Offensive players gather for a team session (vs. air), while rest of team continues field goal protection work.
2:40 – RBs practice catching balls out of the backfield from quarterbacks; young kids receiving instruction on how to run routes.
2:50 – 50-minute offensive/defensive team periods start. After several minutes, everyone breaks into positions where they begin drills. This continued until 3:40.
3:40 – One-on-ones. No interceptions were thrown, and very few touchdowns were thrown. Mainly intermediate routes, and the coaches most interested in technique.
3:50 – Skeleton
4:00 – All team session (11-on-11)
4:15 – Veteran players dismissed, younger players stay for 45-minute extra session of team activities. Teams are permitted three-hour practices, and Riley said he planned on using all three hours for the younger players (get them up to speed) even when he decided to let older players leave early.
Depth Chart with Day 1 practice notes:
Didn't participate much in one-on-ones and skeleton, perhaps to give the younger guys more reps.
Practicing for the first time since injuring his ankle playing pick-up basketball in the spring.
Mike Riley: "Jordan looks like he's a little bit behind at this time. He did run routes, catch balls, but you could just tell he hadn't had a ton of work lately."
Rodgers had a doctor's appointment at Stanford last Wednesday and received clearance to participate in individual activities.
He practiced the first hour and a half or so, partaking in wide receiver drills – including route running – and a little bit of team activities when there wasn't a defense. By the time the team started doing one-on-ones, Rodgers' knee was wrapped in ice.
Rodgers didn't use a brace, but Riley said that one is on the way. The brace is for contact only – "if someone falls on him, (the brace) will keep him from over-flexing," Riley said – and isn't needed otherwise.
Addl. WR note: True freshman Brandin Cooks looked very good on the day.
Overall, Rodgers first practice received high-reviews from everyone in attendance. "I thought he looked like James Rodgers, just with the wrong number," Riley said. (James now wears No. 1, rather than No. 8).
As to the timetable for complete participation, Riley said "he's on schedule to go individual period again tomorrow, but that's as far as we'll go." Rodgers said he's "just going to listen to the coaches," and declined to speculate as to when he may take the field for a game.
McCants took the first-team reps (and was first in line for drills), and true freshmen Malcolm Agnew and Storm Woods were last in line, but after that it was rather jumbled. Terron Ward (listed No. 4 on the depth chart) was in line behind McCants on several occasions, as was Jenkins (No. 2) and Jovan Stevenson (No. 3). It appears it may be a 2A, 2B, 2C situation for now.
Riley: "Impressed with the shape (McCants) is in."
Participated fully, but won't be cleared for contact for a couple of weeks. "It's too bad because I think he could really compete for the starting spot," Riley said.
"Jovan Stevenson looked good today, so did Malcolm Marable," Riley said.
Did not stick around for the 45-minute "younger player" session that lasted until 5:00 but perhaps they're easing him back into things after he missed the spring game with a knee injury.
Also worthy to note: Ward had an uncharacteristic case of the drops on the day.
Agnew, who had an injury-riddled senior year of high school last fall, sat out the second-half of practice after tweaking his ankle. Riley did not have any information beyond. The good news is it wasn't one of Agnew's hamstrings, which is what caused him problems last year.
Halahuni fully participated, but won't be allowed to take part in contact for a while (just like Jenkins).
Riley: "Joe looks great. As I understand it, there's some biology to this. It's only going to heal so fast, and we're going to have to keep him out for a while. It's going to be a couple weeks before we even consider contact."
Katz looked good, and said he felt good afterwards, in what was his first full practice in a long time – his wrist severely limited his activity in the spring. He's back to 100 percent now, and displayed the same arm strength that he's become known for.
Katz did throw one interception, when Jordan Poyer picked off an out route during an 11-on-11 team period.
Vaz threw the only other interception of the day. Rashaad Reynolds picked off the Vaz pass shortly after Poyer's interception.
Riley has said there are two position battles among this group heading into fall -- Phillip vs. Kelly at right tackle and Ellis vs. Lamb at guard. As for the former, it seemed as though Phillip took as many reps at left tackle (where Remmers is the solidified starter) as he did at right tackle.
- Dominic Glover, who moved from end to tackle this year, is listed third on the depth chart due to some unresolved academic issues. Riley said they "won't know (Glover's) final situation probably until the end of this week or beginning of next week."
A lighter moment came when Crichton caught a pass from Johnny Hekker in special teams work early in the day. Crichton started celebrating as soon as he jogged towards the end zone (there was no defense) before someone told him that a celebration like that would wipe a touchdown off the board starting this year. "Man, I thought for a second I was in the NFL," Crichton said.
Collins (coming off abdominal surgery) was limited, as coaches said he would be. They still feel he'll be ready for the season opener.
- ‘Unga "earned" the job in the spring, said Riley. Wilson and Robinson split starting duties last year.
Secondary notes: The entire secondary participated in one-on-ones and skeleton – basically, they're arguably the squad's healthiest group.
