FALL CAMP: DAY 3

CORVALLIS -- If some of your grabmasters have to be limited early in fall camp, it sure is nice to have a guy like Markus Wheaton around. Ryan Katz and Wheaton, who starred this past spring, hooked up on some deep balls Wednesday, while Kevin Frahm cranked up the volume enough so the folks in Eugene could probably hear him clearly. Here's the rundown on Day 3 of Oregon State's fall drills...

Practice Snapshot:
2:00 – Stretching and warm-ups. QBs work on dropbacks, WR route running, punt returns.
2:10 – Punt return blocking work with no ball, D-Line pass rushing, QB-RB handoffs, linebackers work on run coverage against blockers.
2:20 – Full special teams kickoff coverage practice, followed by full punt coverage; QBs throwing at net targets.
2:40 – 11-on-11 field goal practice; more QB-RB handoffs.
2:45 – Offense and defense separate. QBs working with WRs on mid-long range passes; defensive backs do man-to-man coverage and interception return drills.
3:00 – One-on-ones: WRs vs. DBs, LBs vs. TEs/RBs (blocking), OL vs. DL (blocking).
3:10 – Short full team 11-on-11 session.
3:20 – Offense and defense split up again. D-Line heads into Truax Indoor Center; QBs and RBs work on passing; O-Line pass-blocking drills; cornerbacks work run coverage and Cover 2 zone pass coverage; safeties have deep ball interception drills using JUGS machine.
3:30 – QBs work with TEs on passing; RBs practice pass protection blocking.
3:35 – QBs and WRs do passing drills with bump coverage for wideouts; linebackers work on filling lanes in run coverage.
3:45 – Full offense only (handoffs, screens, short-mid range passes); linebackers have zone pass coverage drill.
3:55 – Skeleton; OL vs. DL one-on-ones.
4:05 – Full team session 11-on-11s (3rd down situations)
4:30 – Veterans done for the day; younger players have full team 11-on-11s.

Offense Note: RBs Terron Ward and Jovan Stevenson shared first-team RB duties with Ryan McCants during full-team 11-on-11s. While McCants has the upper hand, it continues to appear this spot will be a time share, with no clear every-down back emerging just yet. WR Obum Gwacham once again got some snaps with the first team.

Quarterback Notebook:
Katz: Katz has proven to be healthy in the early going and hasn't missed a beat in the first three practices. Other than holding onto the ball a little too long during some of the 11-on-11s, he made some nice deep passes, connecting with Wheaton and Prince.

Mike Riley: "I think only if we get some slight indication that (Katz) is tiring or he's sore. Otherwise, for three days here it's been very good, but that's the kind of thing we check on."

Wide Receiver Notebook:
Wheaton: Once again, Wheaton looked great today, hooking up with Katz on two deep bombs during skeleton. In so many ways and with Quon coming back from knee surgery, Wheaton has become the Beavs go-to-guy and he hasn't disappointed in the least.

Rodgers: With his new brace, it was still the same story for James Rodgers. He participated in all receiver drills (including one-on-ones today), and was done at about 3:40.

Riley on Rodgers' new brace: "I asked him and he said he didn't have any big reactions to it. He just kind of shrugged his shoulders; no big deal."

Catchings: Darrell Catchings took Rodgers' place on first team in the drills Rodgers did not participate in.

Micah Hatfield: Hatfield broke a bone in his thumb on an awkward catch attempt at yesterday's practice.

Riley on Hatfied's injury: "Micah—we don't know if he's going to have surgery or not, but he has a … broken bone in his thumb, so he's out for at least six weeks."

Riley on Bishop's injury recovery: "I was worried about (Bishop). He had that surgery, was out of spring ball, and I didn't know where he'd be. I've actually been impressed, I'm happy with what we've seen so far."

Running Back Notebook:
Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) remains sidelined with less than full participation, and McCants, Ward and Stevenson are still sharing reps with no clear frontrunner emerging yet.

Defensive Note: Starting safety Lance Mitchell did not participate in any drills in practice today.

Riley: "(Mitchell) is tight; Tight hamstring, abdominal tightness."

Expect it to be a day or two before he's back out there, nothing to worry about though, said Riley. Josh LaGrone filled in Mitchell's place with the first-team throughout the day and was serviceable. Redshirt freshman Ryan Murphy also saw a few first team reps during skeleton, but LaGrone took them all in full-team session.

Robinson has been filling in at SAM linebacker while Collins is out. Collins was not involved in any drills today, but was in shoulder pads. Collins should jump right in as a starter once he's healthy.

3rd string sophomore safety Zeke Sanders made a very nice interception in 11-on-11s off a tipped pass thrown by Sean Mannion and it was almost a pick-six.

With Mitchell out today, Anthony Watkins had more responsibility as a safety with LaGrone in. Riley praised Watkins for filling in nicely at safety after Collins moved over to linebacker -- "Anthony Watkins has worked so hard in this program for so long, and he played a lot last year, worked his way into that. The only reason at that time we could think about moving Cam Collins to linebacker was that we were confident that Anthony would be able to play."

Senior DT Kevin Frahm was very vocal with both offensive and defensive teammates during full-teams, as he's prone to be out on the field. Riley commented about his work ethic and the respect he commands from the rest of the players.
