CORVALLIS – Ryan Katz was sharp on the fourth day of fall drills, both to varying targets and locales. True freshman linebacker D.J. Welch got a chance to jump in with the first team, and fellow ‘backer Cameron Collins is slowly but surely getting into the flow of things. That and more, from Warner Strausbaugh out at the OSU practice field…

Defense Note:
Seumalo and Glover have both been in with first team at DT while waiting for word on Castro Masaniai's legal issues -- his status is expected to be cleared up on Friday. As for Seumalo and Glover, the DL rotations are a bit different so the 1s aren't always together. For the most part, Glover has probably gotten in the most work with the 1s but it's close.

Offense Note:
Backup H-Back Tyler Perry made a few nice grabs in full-team drills in Joe Halahuni's absence. Darrell Catchings continues to take first-team reps in James Rodgers' place.

Quarterback Notebook:
Katz: The starting QB looked particularly sharp today, especially firing on all cylinders in the red zone skeleton and red zone full-team 11-on-11s towards the end of practice. He spread the wealth too, hitting Wheaton, Catchings, Bishop, and Obum Gwacham for multiple TDs during the drills.

Vaz: Backup Cody Vaz was a different story. He looked particularly shaky in the first skeleton session—missing and overthrowing his targets. Vaz did, however, hook up with Geno Munoz on a very nice deep pass today.

Wide Receiver Notebook:
Gwacham: The 6-5 redshirt freshman made probably the two most highlight worthy plays of the day. The first, when Lance Mitchell bit on play-action and Katz threw the ball perfectly over his right shoulder for Gwacham to make the grab with Mitchell on his coattails.

The other came in red zone 11-on-11s, when Gwacham made a catch only someone of his height could make, jumping over his defender and coming up with the nice grab.

Rodgers: Same story for Rodgers, worked with receivers and offense-only drills, but nothing involving defenders.

Update on Hatfield's injury from Riley: "Micah's got better news than I thought. He doesn't have to have surgery, and instead of six weeks, it's probably four."

Running Back Notebook:
Jenkins: Jordan Jenkins finally got involved in some drills today. His shoulder injury has held him back the first three days, but he was a part of offensive and running back practice today.

Ward: It wasn't the best day for Terron Ward. He coughed up a fumble and also dropped a screen pass during the no-huddle full-team 11-on-11s. Chalk it up to having a bad day and nothing else.

O-Line Notebook:
Grant Johnson: Coach Riley has liked what he's seen so far out of new center Grant Johnson. The former guard swapped positions with Josh Andrews.

Riley: "And this guy, Grant Johnson is smart, he is steady as they come, that's one of the reasons we wanted him to become center. He's poised and we knew nothing would rattle him."

Defense Notebook:
Doctor: Starting WILL linebacker Michael Doctor was absent from practice today.

Riley: "Michael had a—they described it as a "full body sprain". I guess he cramped up after practice."

Riley went on to say that Doctor evidently wasn't getting enough hydration when he cramped, so doctors advised him to stay out today. This should be a very short-term problem.

Welch: True freshman D.J. Welch got his chance to run with the first-teamers in Doctor's place. Besides some miscommunication on where to be on a play during red zone 11-on-11s, the youngster looked to be adequate with the big boys.

Mitchell: Starting safety Lance Mitchell returned to the fold today after sitting out of practice yesterday with a tight hamstring and abdominal muscle. He looked his usual self and even made a nice interception in one-on-ones.

Collins: Cameron Collins got his first real work in today. He participated in a few linebacker only drills, but was limited to only those.
