CORVALLIS – For the first time since fall camp began the running backs corps doesn't resemble a line running out the back of the store. This evening's session, however, featured Ryan Katz going deep. And you don't hear much about this walk-on, but he has some very sticky hands.

Practice Snapshot:
6:30: Special teams and warmups
7:00-7:20: Position drills
7:20-7:30: No huddle, start at the 40 and move the ball down the field until the offense scores. (Little resistance from the defense by design.)
7:30-7:40: Skeleton (half field)
7:40-8:00: Team
6:00-8:10: Skeleton (7-on-7)
8:10-8:30: Team

Ryan Katz: Connected on 6-of-9 passes during half-field skeleton, although the work mostly came on short route work. Markus Wheaton and Colby Prince had a drop each; the only pass Katz misfired on was a check down to Ryan McCants.

During full 7-on-7 skeleton, Katz connected on deep balls with Wheaton (who put a wicked move on cornerback Jordan Poyer), Kevin Cummings and Jordan Bishop. Katz almost connected with Wheaton on a second deep ball, but Wheaton caught the ball out of bounds. Receiver coach Brent Brennan was visibly upset with Wheaton, telling the receivers to run straight and employ other skills so they don't wind up out of bounds. Katz badly overthrew Bishop on a later play.

During team drills, Katz went deep to Wheaton on the first play for a long gain. The ball was a bit underthrown, but Wheaton was able to make the adjustment and the catch while cornerback Rashaad Reynolds' back was to the ball. Katz later badly overthrew Obum Gwacham. Safety Ryan Murphy made the easy interception. Katz did, however, connect on his share of deep throws, see below in Secondary Notes.

Cody Vaz: DNP (back)

Running backs:
The running back line that was seven yesterday was four today, with Woods (ankle), Ward (knee), and Marable (moved to cornerback earlier today) not in the rotation. Ryan McCants, Jordan Jenkins, Malcolm Agnew and Jovan Stevenson shared reps fairly evenly.

Lance Mitchell sat out today.

Ryan Murphy and Rashaad Reynolds ran with the 1s.

It seemed like Katz aired it out more than usual Friday night, and it seemed each defensive back got victimized at least once. Hardin: In case you didn't hear this morning, he'll be out for an extended period of time due to a shoulder injury sustained Saturday. He's hoping to make it back by Week 4 or 5.

Wide receivers:
Brandin Cooks (ankle) and Geno Munoz (ice on his upper leg) didn't practice. James Rodgers wasn't in pads, but he did do position drills with the receivers.

Wheaton: Per usual, the most active receiver of the day. He seems to lose focus and drop an easy one at least once a practice, but also turns in his fair share of big catches.

Garett Hall: A walk-on who rarely is written about but has some of the best hands on the team, turned in a sparkling, diving catch during 7-on-7.
