QUOTES: Mike Riley

MIKE RILEY HAS never been 0-3 at Oregon State before -- until now. Here's what the head man of the Beavers had to say following the loss to UCLA, the second home defeat in three games and headed into the tilt with ASU searching for the first win of the still-young season.

On the loss to UCLA:
"It really won't take long to go back and look at opportunities, and also opportunities we gifted them," said Mike Riley. "To credit UCLA, they took care of the football. They had a new starting quarterback, he started against us last year, and he played efficiently. He ran their offense well, and he made some throws and competed like crazy. They made some plays.

"We just had lots of opportunities, different choices in the passing game, and of course losing the ball and giving them (it back) was a major factor in the game."

On special teams' performance against UCLA:
"Bruce Read does a great job of preparing the kids, and there's great pride taken in our kick coverage. I'm sure we won the net part of the game today.

"That game today was totally about field position. It was totally about who had the upper hand and who got good field position. We gave them outstanding field position on a couple of turnovers, and that probably is the game."

On the Beavs' running game:
"There is going to have to be continued work by our offense in general to find that balance so we can indeed be more effective in running the ball, and be able to rely on it more.

"When we absolutely need something, getting it or counting on it, we are not there in the running game.

"If we can make strides in that area, it's pretty exciting because there are a lot of weapons in the passing game, and there is a lot of production out there to explore."

On this year's young OSU team:
"We understand they're good players, and they are learning on the run. We have not coached this young of a team at Oregon State. However, they are really fun to coach. They're eager and they're talented. "Scott Crichton and Dylan Wynn playing together out there at defensive end is a pretty good picture. I'd like them to get older really fast, but that's alright, they are working like crazy and they make a lot of good plays. We'll just keep working them."
