Early JC signing period starts Wednesday

THE EARLY SIGNING period for mid-year junior college players begins Wednesday, and the Beavs are decidedly in the market for instant impact players who can contribute in 2012.

The early signing period for junior college transfers runs from Dec. 21 - Jan. 15.

At the top of the needs list are d-tackles, and Junior Salt would be a big get for the Beavers.

But Salt, who was once on the early signing period track, is no longer. "I'm not going to be able to sign mid-year, so I won't be making my decision until next month," Salt told Scout.com two days ago.

It would have been a big bonus to get him in for spring ball but the delay doesn't figure to lessen the Beavs' desire when it comes to Salt, or for anyone else.

SALT HAS HIS pick of schools, with full rides from Oregon State, Florida, Arizona, BYU, Colorado, K-State, Utah and others. He has official visits planned to Florida and Oklahoma. The competition for him is stout.

Salt (6-3, 340) is massive, a true gap plugger. But he recently told Scout.com he wants to play on the offensive line, also mentioning Utah and Cal feel the same way and want to put him on that side of the ball.

He tripped to Oregon State back in October.

Utah, Oregon State, Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, and Cal are Salt's top schools, he told Scout.com this week.

In OSU's favor, he has an excellent relationship with Beaver d-line coach Joe Seumalo. But other schools have forged ties with him as well.

This one figures to come down to the Salr living room. Oregon State will need a heckuva in-home visit close if they're to land him.

Early signing period junior college targets for Oregon State include College of the Desert linebacker Cade Cowdin and Mt. San Antonio receiver Alonzo Agwuenu. San Joaquin Delta DT Josh Banks is another possibility who looks to graduate this month. L.A. Harbor's Niu Sale has an OSU offer but is in high demand and it looks, at this moment anyway, as if the Beavs would have a lot of ground to make up. DL Koliniasi Leota is another possibility but it is unclear if he'll graduate with his AA this month or if he'll be a regular period transfer in May.
