Beav on the Fast Track

Hello again my Beaver brethren. With the off season in full swing and thoughts turning from touchdowns and tackles to beer and barbecues, I'd like to take this time to introduce you to one of your own that is making quite a name for himself in the summer sport of drag racing.

Rich Bailey graduated from Oregon State in 1990 and majored in Graphic Design. He is married to wife Susan (a U of O grad) and has two lovely daughters, six year old Acacia, and one year old Christine. During the week Rich works for the Oregon Department of Transportation, but the reason for this article is his mode of transportation on the weekends.

Rich is a drag racer. Competing in the competitive Top Comp class, Rich is the pilot of a 572 cubic inch, rear engine alcohol dragster. Running at speeds approaching 180 mph, Rich covers the quarter mile course in a little over 7 seconds. For those of you that have never attended a major drag race here’s a little perspective. A brand new Corvette would probably travel that same distance in about 14 seconds, just about twice as long.

Rich finished 9th out of 83 race teams that participated in Top Comp in 2001, won the Oregon Open at Madras Raceway Park and has two event wins over much more powerful blown alcohol dragsters at Woodburn.

Rich has been featured in newspapers, on television, in national racing magazines and on radio. By his estimation, he signs about 3,000 autographed photos per year. Rich credits his time at Oregon State as a big part of his success in racing. “My experience at OSU gave me some much needed polish and the skills necessary to market my race program. The speech communication classes enabled me to successfully represent a large company like my sponsor, Capitol Auto group.”

Bailey will be racing this weekend at the Woodburn Dragstrip.

“The time spent at Oregon State were some of the most memorable times of my life.” He continues.

”When it’s fall and the leaves start falling, I sometimes wish I could do it all over again. I love OSU and try to get back down to Corvallis for as many games as I can, but unfortunately can’t make as many games as I would like to.”

Rich will be racing this weekend at Woodburn in the Lucas Oil NHRA Fire and Thunder Drags and would like to extend an invitation to all his Beaver brethren to come out to the track and stop by his trailer. Maybe spend a little time talking about racing or Beaver football.

You can see photos of Rich and his racecar at www.capracing.com. Going from a standing start to almost 180mph in under eight seconds? This guy is definitely a Beav on the FAST track.
