SPRING DAY 10: 'Sloppy', but DL & LB please

CORVALLIS -- Mike Riley missed his second consecutive practice to be with his father who is in the hospital. Riley is expected to be at Saturday's practice, however, with the improved health of his dad in the last couple of days. Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker ran practice for the second consecutive day and called it, "sloppy."

Mark Banker was most impressed with the play of his defensive line and linebacking corps who stuffed the run for the majority of Day 10.

Players wore full pads and had a full contact period in the middle of practice.

DT Castro Masaniai also looked impressive for the second straight practice, participating in individual and one-on-one drills.

Depth Chart, with Day 10 practice notes

Offensive Line (Despite being outplayed by the defensive line for the most of the day, they did manage to spring a few long runs for Ward, Agnew, and Woods on different plays. Pass protection was poor, however, with d-ends Wynn and Crichton bringing a great deal of pressure.)

Left Tackle:
Justin Addie (Continues to get all of the first team reps with Kelly out.)
Colin Kelly (Only participated in individual non-contact drills)

Left Guard:
Josh Andrews

Roman Sapolu
Jake Welch

Right Guard: (Still no clear starter at this position.)
Mike Beaton
David Vieru

Right Tackle:
Michael Philipp
Derek Nielsen

Wide Receivers (The offense focused on one of their staples, the fly-sweep, for a good part of practice with Wheaton and Cooks splitting the duties. The play was successful the majority of the time, usually gaining 5-15 yards a pop.)

Brandin Cooks (Looks a little reminiscent of James Rodgers running the end-around that made Rodgers a star at OSU.)
Micah Hatfield

Split End:
Markus Wheaton
Richard Mullaney (Is beginning to look like he could be a possession type receiver for the Beavers at some point. Runs good routes and always catches the ball across the middle, even and despite when being hit.)
Geno Munoz
Jeff Bedbury

Obum Gwacham (Dropped a couple of passes, possibly because of the steady downpour inside of Reser, but had a few nice grabs as well.)
Kevin Cummings
Mitch Singler
Kramer Ferrell
*Jordan Bishop

Tight Ends/H Backs (Prince returned for the first time in over a week from injury and looked 100 percent. Connor Hamlett continues to impress with tough receptions over the middle and hang on to balls after being hit hard by Murphy and Zimmerman on separate plays.)

Colby Prince (Looked healthy in his first practice back from a hamstring injury.)
Connor Hamlett (Had multiple catches in traffic and held on to the ball after getting hit over the middle.)
Tyler Perry
Kellen Clute
Caleb Smith (Dropped a couple of routine catches.)

Running Backs: (Woods was fully back from a concussion and looked good running up the middle and catching passes out of the backfield. Agnew hits the hole hardest of any of the running backs but still fumbles occasionally. Ward might be the most consistent at this point, but has lacked the big play ability of the other two.)

Malcolm Agnew (Hit the holes hard and got decent yardage after contact.)
Storm Woods (100 percent healthy again)
Terron Ward
Jordan Jenkins
*Jovan Stevenson (Is beginning to participate more in contact drills but still isn't fully back.)

Quarterbacks: (Mannion connected with Wheaton deep for long touchdowns like he has seemed to do in every practice. He was also accurate on timing and out routes but forced a couple of balls in the middle of the field that were intercepted -- once by Zimmerman and once by Murphy. Vaz was solid working with the second team.)

Sean Mannion
Cody Vaz
Jack Lomax
Richie Harrington

Defensive Line ("They're getting better," said Banker. "Last year was the worst I've had stopping the run and is something we desperately need to get better at this year. Between the experience and improvement from last year I think we'll be a lot better this year.")

Left Defensive End
Scott Crichton (Had constant pressure on the outside as well as up the middle at times. It's scary to think that he's much improved according to Riley and Banker.)
Devon Kell
Rusty Fernando
Lavonte Barnett

Left Defensive Tackle
Mana Rosa
Joe Lopez
Brandon Bennett
Castro Masaniai (Looked even better than Tuesday in his second practice back from injury.)

Right Defensive Tackle
Andrew Seumalo
Desmond Collins
Mana Tuivailala
Noa Aluesi

Right Defensive End
Dylan Wynn (Chased down Agnew on the outside and looked just as fast as the running back. Like Crichton, Wynn looks like he'll be improved from last year's fantastic freshman season.)
Rudolf Fifita
John Braun
Na'Alii Robins
*Blake Harrah (Not participating)

Linebackers: ("They have experience now, with the exception of D.J. and I expect it to show," said Banker. "Obviously we won't know until we play somebody else but they're so fast and have tackled well this spring. If we get our assignments right these guys can be very good.")

SAM Linebacker
D.J. Welch
Jabral Johnson
Will Storey
Kyle Egan

MIK Linebacker:
Feti Unga
Rueben Robinson ("Rueben Robinson has stood out to me this spring," said Banker. "He gets off of blocks and wraps up. He could be a player for us.")
Josh Williams
Jaswha James
Kyle Gardner
Charlie Gilmur

WIL Linebacker:
Michael Doctor ("Doctor's showing me something this year," said Banker. "He's a lot faster than last year and has been very prepared coming into the spring.")
Cade Cowdin
Shaydon Akuna
Zeke Sanders

Secondary: (Zimmerman, Murphy, and Audiss all had interceptions for the secondary and Martin also looked good once again. Zimmerman especially has really come on the last couple of practices and should at the least be a solid backup to Anthony Watkins when he returns from injury.)

Left Cornerback:
Jordan Poyer
Keynan Parker
*Larry Scott

Ryan Murphy
Peter Ashton

Tyrequek Zimmerman (Zimmerman continues to make plays for the defense. Had an interception on a tipped pass over the middle.)
*Anthony Watkins (Still out with injury but will be back for fall camp.)
Micah Audiss

Right Cornerback:
Rashaad Reynolds
Sean Martin
Malcolm Marable
*Brian Watkins
