The continuing inclement weather conditions in Louisiana and neighboring states due to Hurricane Isaac has prompted school officials at Oregon State University and Nicholls State University to postpone the Sat., Sept. 1 college football game at Reser Stadium.
"It became apparent as the day progressed that the safety of Nicholls State's team and personnel was a primary concern," OSU Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis said. "Many of the Colonels' student-athletes and staff are with family and there is a deepening concern about their safety in returning to campus. We will continue to discuss the possibility of rescheduling the game."
The bye weeks for both teams do not match as Oregon State is off Sept. 15 and Nicholls State is idle Sept. 29. Officials at both schools will consider scheduling options in the near future with the possibility of playing the weekend of Dec. 1 providing OSU is not in the Pac-12 Championship Game or Nicholls State is not in the Football Championship Series playoffs. The Pac-12 Conference will also be involved in discussions of any reschedule of the game.
OSU will share more information as it becomes available.
This is the first postponed OSU football game since Sept. 15, 2001 when the Beavers' home game with Montana State was cancelled due to 9/11. OSU later scheduled a Nov. 17, 2001 contest at home vs. Northern Arizona.
The Beavers will now open the season Sat., Sept. 8 against the Wisconsin Badgers in Corvallis at 1 p.m. in game being televised by FX.
A release from Oregon State earlier in the day said other possibilities could include playing the game Sunday or Monday if necessary but with no mention of that in this evening's release, it appears that option is no longer on the table.
