Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated is predicting a 28-24 Texas win on Dec. 29 in San Antonio.
"Mike Riley's team overachieved. Mack Brown's team underwhelmed. If both squads play exactly as they did during the regular season, Oregon State should cruise. But talented teams have a knack for getting their act together for a bowl game, and Texas' defense, with studs like defensive end Alex Okafor and safety Kenny Vacarro, will do just that in containing the Beavers' passing attack."
Mandel back in August predicted the Beavs to go 4-8 on the season.
A new coach will be calling the plays for Texas in the Alamo Bowl and for next season. Major Applewhite, 34, assumed the duties with Bryan Harsin taking the head job at Arkansas State. Applewhite was already the co-offensive coordinator the past two seasons but Harsin called the plays on game day. He's coached the running backs the last two seasons but will switch to quarterbacks.
The offense, however, is not expected to change for the bowl game. In other moves by Mack Brown, wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Stacy Searels was given the title of assistant head coach for the offense. Tight ends coach Bruce Chambers was named recruiting coordinator.
THE ALAMO BOWL could among the more highly attended bowls this season with in-state Texas fans expected to flock to San Antonio.
"Ticket sales are on the same pace with last year when we had the fourth largest crowd in Valero Alamo Bowl history," bowl official Rick Hill told the San Antonio Business Journal. Last year's attendance was 65,000-plus.
TEXAS RUNNING BACK Johnathan Gray was the No. 2 rated running back in the nation this last recruiting class according to Scout.com.
Gray, a 5-star prospect out of Aledo, Texas, has rushed for 683 yards on 142 carries (4.8 ypc) as a true freshman this season.
Storm Woods, a redshirt freshman for OSU, has rushed for 822 yards on 171 carries this season for the Beavs (also 4.8 ypc). Woods was a three-star commit ranked No. 82 in the nation by Scout.com in the class of 2011.
The Austin Business Journal, citing a Bloomberg report, says Mack Brown was the nation's highest-paid public university employee in 2012, hauling in $5.3 million.
