Beavs showing up in early preseason polls

IT'S ONLY MAY but the preseason college football polls and projections are starting to trickle out -- and Oregon State is again a Top 25 team in 2013 according to the prognosticators.

Athlon Sports ranks the Beavs No. 25 in their preseason poll.

"Oregon and Stanford are the class the Pac-12, but Oregon State is near the top of the next tier," Athlon says. "Contending for a league title will be tough — especially since the Beavers play in the North — but Oregon State has the talent and experience to flirt with the 10-win mark."

Meanwhile, Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports pegs the Beavs as the No. 21 team in his post-spring Top 25.

"Never doubt the Beavers under Mike Riley," writes Dodd.

By the way, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports is projecting the Beavs to the Holiday Bowl this year, where they would take on Kansas State.

The Associated Press preseason poll won't come out until much later this summer but Phil Steele has projected how the AP poll will look.

Steele says the AP will slot Oregon State at No. 21.

"Mike Riley is one of the most underrated head coaches in the country as he routinely outperforms my expectations including last year as the Beavers off a 3-9 season rebounded to go 9-4," writes Steele.

The Orlando Sentinel has Oregon State at No. 19 in their preseason polling.

"On the heels of a nine-win season, the Beavers have a lot to look forward to in 2013...(but) the defense loses at least five players and will need a boost," the paper notes.
