And then they were tied

IT WAS A good old fashioned pitcher's duel. Unfortunately for Oregon State, it didn't start on their end until the third inning. The Ducks scored three runs in the first two innings and OSU was unable to get untracked at the plate in a 3-0 loss to Oregon in the first of a three game series. The two schools are now tied atop the standings in the Pac-12.

OSU's Matt Boyd went eight innings but lost the decision to the Ducks' Tommy Thorpe Friday at PK Park as No. 4 Oregon State fell to No. 6 Oregon.

Boyd allowed seven hits and three runs, with five of those hits and all the scoring coming in the first two innings. Three of the early hits were bunts and bloopers. He walked three and struck out five.

Thorpe held the Beavers to two hits while walking two and striking out seven. He was replaced in the ninth after walking Tyler Smith, and the Beavers loaded the bases on closer Jimmie Sherfy, who hit two batsmen before closing the door. Danny Hayes battled Sherfy to a 3-2 count before flying out to center, ending the game and giving the Oregon reliever his 20th save of the season.

Boyd, who allowed just two hits after the second inning, took the loss to drop to 10-3 on the year.

The Beavers' (41-9 overall, 20-5 Pac-12 Conference) two hits belonged to Ryan Barnes and Andy Peterson, who each reached on infield singles.

Oregon (43-11, 20-5) posted three hits in the first, two of which stayed in the infield but a hard hit single by the game's third batter, Ryon Healy, netted the Ducks their first run. Scott Heineman closed out the inning's scoring with a groundout to first.

J.J. Altobelli blooped a single to center in the second, scoring leadoff hitter Nick Catalano, who had opened the inning with a double.
