OSU baseball commit may try out for football

CHRISTIAN MARTINEK OUT of Jesuit High in Portland is a standout in baseball and football. And he's headed to Corvallis after his senior season in high school on a baseball scholie. But will he also try out for football at Oregon State?

Scout.com's Brandon Huffman reports Christian Martinek is being afforded the opportunity to try out as a walk on next fall -- if he does make it onto the football team, that scholarship would switch to football, as per NCAA rules.

Martinek is the glue of Jesuit's defensive line and projects at d-end at the next level, or possibly outside linebacker.

He has played a variety of positions on offense headed into his senior season.

On the diamond, Martinek (6-4, 225) missed most of his junior season with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow.

As a sophomore was named to the Class 6A all-state first team as a pitcher. He missed the majority of his junior season dealing with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow.

The lefty returned to the mound just this month at the 2013 Area Code Games in California and touched 92 mph in his two innings of work.
