THUD: Beavs lose in final seconds to EWU

IT WAS APPARENT from the start that Eastern Washington, ranked No. 4 nationally in the FCS poll, came ready to play. Oregon State trailed at the half and could never gain enough separation, as EWU answered back time and time again. With No. 25 OSU clinging to a three-point lead, a Beaver pass interference penalty on third-and-goal gave EWU another life, and they cashed in two plays later.

EWU botched the extra point and it almost came back to haunt them, even though only 18 ticks remained.

Oregon State moved the ball swiftly downfield on two long pass plays in 15 seconds, giving OSU a shot at a 52-yard field goal to tie it. Trevor Romaine had the distance, but his boot sailed wide right.

Final score: EWU 49, Oregon State 46.

With 4:50 left in the game, Oregon State took a 46-43 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by Terron Ward. The drive went 67 yards in 12 plays, taking 5:27 on the clock.

But EWU marched down the field inside the 10-yard line and after a pass interference call against Sean Martin in the end zone, they scored the winning touchdown with just 18 seconds left on the clock.

The airwaves were busy on Saturday in Corvallis. Sean Mannion threw for for 400 yards. So did Eastern.

A 23-point blitz in the second quarter gave EWU the lead at the half 29-17.

Oregon State responded with 29 points of the their own in the second half.

We'll be back a little later with more coverage.
