OSU SPRING DAY 6: A little chippy out there

CORVALLIS – It's official, Oregon State has been bitten by the injury bug this spring. Meanwhile, out on the field, the Beav defensive line looked good on Friday -- but was that partly a result of the offensive line's struggles? And things got a little chippy for one of the Beaver veterans, as well as a particular position group.

Linebacker D.J. Alexander did not have a good day, drawing negative attention from the coaches and a player or two during drills. The problem was focus, and the coaches were not shy about laying into him.

No such problem for WR Victor Bolden, who looked great yet again returning kicks, showing off his speed along with the ability to hit holes and follow blockers.

Garrett Owens took the lion's share of the kickoffs with Trevor Romaine sitting on the sideline until it was time to practice field goals.

Running backs Terron Ward and Storm Woods continued to split time with the ones.

Both Woods and Ward had their fair share of big runs including one from Ward where he ran over Jabral Johnson before cutting across the field.

During a defensive drill focused on tackling technique, the majority of players were tackling too high for the staff's liking. There was a seemingly constant din from coach Rod Perry of ‘Lower/Get Lower.'

Tyler Anderson had a nice block on Dylan Wynn securing a hole for the running back.

The offensive line struggled today, and that meant the d-line looked good. Still, they did open up some nice holes at times.

That's not to say Coach Mike Cavanaugh was having any of it. He was extremely unhappy with their performance, particularly early in the day.

Center Roman Sapolu was among those singled out at one point for not blocking the right man. Grant Bays spent the majority of the day at center with the 1s. Left tackle Booby Keenan looked to be fading late in practice, allowing d-ends Obum Gwacham and Baker Pritchard to get the better of him.

QB Sean Mannion was consistent and showed some nice touch hitting receivers in the end zone.

The quarterbacks as a whole looked better today than on Wednesday and were more on target. Luke Del Rio was the exception, he tended to overthrow his receivers on medium-long routes, including throwing an interception to Brandon Arnold towards the end of practice.

In better news, ESPN and multiple other outlets are reporting Del Rio has been granted his waiver request and will not have to sit out the 2014 season after transferring to OSU from Alabama as a walk on.

CB Dashon Hunt, filling in for the injured Larry Scott, had a nice knock away on a pass from Mannion intended for Bolden.

On another play Bolden almost brought in a nice pass from Mannion, but had it knocked out of his hands at the last minute by a defender who was obscured from my view.

The offense spent some time Friday working on getting play calls from the sideline.

Pritchard was also pushing TE Connor Hamlett around at one point. Another tight end, Kellen Clute, was unable to haul in a ball with Micah Audiss on his back.

Meanwhile, on another play, LB Rommel Mageo had a nice stop at the line.

Bolden showed off some excellent speed taking a short pass from Mannion and bolting upfield for a huge gain. His burst is impressive.

  • Harlow came out with an injury during drills, but came back out a few minutes, though he was moving a bit gingerly at first.

  • Out of action today were Michael Doctor, Larry Scott, Isaac Seumalo, Josh Mitchell, Will Hopkins, Stevie Coury, Devan Filipe, Tyler Perry, Brandon Bennett, A.J. Hedgecock.

  • Hedgecock was injured during practice and had tightness just above his right knee.

  • Bennett had ice on his right ankle.

  • Seumalo continued to use his scooter.

Cyril Noland practiced with the safeties today, he had been practicing with the linebackers. No word yet on if this was a numbers thing, an experiment or if it could be permanent.

    • Wynn wore the helmet cam today.

James Rodgers was at practice today as a spectator.

    • A group from Wilsonville High was also in attendance.
