It's official, Oregon State No. 1 in polls

THERE ARE, for most purists, three major Division I college baseball polls. They are: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and USA Today. On Monday, Oregon State was ranked No. 1 in all three of them.

USA Today and Baseball America have OSU first, Louisiana-Lafayette second and Virginia third. Collegiate Baseball has Virginia fourth, with Miami at No. 3.

Collegiate Baseball has had the Beavs at No. 1 for a few weeks. Baseball America and USA Today just moved OSU to the top spot this week.

The Beavs are ranked No. 1 in the Baseball America poll for the first time since 2007. Oregon State has been ranked in the top five of all three polls the past six weeks. The team's worst ranking this season? That would be No. 8.

The RPI doesn't come out until Tuesday. Oregon State is currently ranked No. 5 in that metric but is likely to go up with their weekend series win over Washington.

Aaron Fitt, who does some really excellent work at Baseball America, likes the Beavs' starting three of Ben Wetzler (LH), Andrew Moore (RH) and Jace Fry (LH).

"It gets my vote for the best in the country, followed by Miami and TCU," wrote Fitt in his baseball chat column on Monday.

Virginia, who had held the top spot in Baseball America and USA Today's polls for several weeks, lost two of three to unranked West Virginia this weekend. It was Virginia's first weekend series loss of the year, though the Cavaliers have had a bushel of narrow wins this season.

Oregon State has one non-conference game against Oregon on Tuesday, with the final series of the regular season against USC this weekend. One win over USC in any of the three games will give Oregon State the Pac-12 crown. The Beavs are the defending Pac-12 champs.
