Beavs pick up a few votes in Amway poll

THE ARTIST formerly known as the USA Today Coaches Poll, is now called the Amway Coaches Poll. And they just released their Top 25. The Beavs, unlike last year when they entered the season at No. 25, didn't make the 2014 list. But they did pick up a few votes...

Some coaches still think the Beavs are a Top 25 team.

In the "Others receiving votes" category, Oregon State received four votes in the Amway Coaches preseason poll released Thursday.

Six Pac-12 teams were in the top 25: No. 4 Oregon, No. 7 UCLA, No. 11 Stanford, No. 15 USC, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 25 Washington. (Like the Beavs, Arizona also showed up in the "Others", receiving one vote.)

Pac-12 coaches who have a vote in this year's Amway polling are Mike Riley, Oregon State; Mike Leach, WSU; Mike MacIntyre, Colorado; Chris Petersen, Washington; Rich Rodriguez, Arizona and Steve Sarkisian at Southern Cal.

In the poll, No. 1 Florida State received 56 of 62 first-place votes. Alabama was No. 2, Oklahoma No. 3.

Not long ago, the Coaches poll and the Associated Press poll determined the national champion and held huge influence in college football but that influenced has waned. But things have changed markedly over the past 10 years.

The AP poll asked to be removed from the BCS process in 2005 and the inclusion of computers into the formula diminished the reach of the Coaches poll. This season, college football moves to a four-team playoff who entrants will be determined by a selection committee.

Still, the AP and Coaches preseason polls (and polls throughout the season) count for something among fans. The preseason AP poll is expected out shortly.
