OSU's Hollingsworth: 4th-string to starter

OSU ROOKIE LUKE HOLLINGSWORTH was the fourth-string left side defensive end on the official depth chart from the opener all the way through the Colorado game. Now he’s listed as the starter headed into Thursday's game against Utah (Fox Sports 2, Pac-12 Networks, MyNet stations; 7 p.m.). So what the heck happened? Injuries, right? Well, not entirely ...

Apparently it speaks to how valuable a spark can be, plus some good work in practice over the bye week...

Luke Hollingsworth took the field against Colorado in the second half and got to the quarterback almost immediately. Hollingsworth (6-3, 257) was playing out of position on the inside, at defensive tackle after Jalen Grimble and Noke Tago had been lost to knee injuries against USC.

This week he's listed above senior Obum Gwacham and redshirt freshman Titus Failauga at left end. Both those players are likely to rotate in but for now, Hollingsworth gets the starting nod.

Hollingsworth is a second-year sophomore out of Snow College. He was ranked a two-star prospect in the Class of 2014.

The starting defensive line figures to be: RDE Jaswha James, DT Bud Delva, DT Dylan Wynn and LDE Hollingsworth.

But there figures to be plenty of rotation and guys moving in and out. The Oregonian reported the second team in Monday's practice as Titus Failauga, Brandon Bennett, Ali'i Robins and Baker Pritchard. When OSU goes to their nickel package, the Beaver front usually features Lavonte Barnett, Delva, Wynn, Obum Gwacham.

NOTABLE NOTES:
  • DT Kyle Peko was absent from Monday's practice, and it was later reported by the Portland Tribune he will not play this season for Oregon State . Peko finished up a class on Tuesday, the final barrier standing between him and becoming eligible. And Mike Riley had said it was possible they'd have Peko for the Utah game -- and he ran with the first team last week. However, Peko did not pass the on-line psychology class, the newspaper said.

  • Peko, who is not on scholarship, will continue taking classes at OSU this fall and will remain on the Beavers' scout team. If he gains eligibility after the fall term, Riley has promised to put him on scholarship in January, said the newspaper. Peko was originally set to arrive last year with 3-to-play-2. If he qualifies in time for the 2015 season, he will have one season of eligibility as a redshirt-senior.

  • Oregon State tight end Connor Hamlett has made the cut on the John Mackey Award Watch List. The organization cut their list to 32 tight ends on Monday. Hamlett has 18 catches this season for 219 yards and a touchdown.
