Oregon State loses in a rout

OREGON STATE NEVER mounted a charge, never swing momentum their way in a 38-14 loss at Stanford on Saturday. The Beavs fell to 4-3 (1-3 Pac-12), as Sean Mannion and the Beaver offense struggled all game to move the ball, scoring one TD after an interception and their second in garbage time.

Sean Mannion had his worst day of the season, throwing for just 122 yards on 14-30 passing with no TDs. The Beaver offensive line didn't give him much help. Mannion was sacked six times. The Cardinal outgained Oregon State 438 to 221 yards, with much of the yardage on OSU's side coming after Stanford took a 35-7 lead. The Beaver D showed flashes early but they were more than counterbalanced as OSU allowed a number of big plays including 42- and 37-yard TD passes along with a 37-yard QB run. Luke Del Rio relieved Mannion in the fourth quarter, going 4-of-8 for 47 yards. Damien Haskins ran for a 1-yard TD run in the final minutes for Oregon State's only other score. The only reason OSU stayed in the game as long as they did were two takeaways from the defense. The first was interception by safety Ryan Murphy, stopping Stanford on what looked like another Stanford TD drive.

The second was a nice pick-and-return by linebacker Michael Doctor, gicing OSU the ball at the Stanford 5-yard line. Running back Chris Brown, alternating with Terron Ward with Storm Woods out injured, took it in the next play to tie the game 7-7.

But Beaver running back touches have been few and far between for the Beavs compared to the pass. At the half, Oregon State had attempted 22 passes (including two sacks) against nine running back carries.

The Beavs had just 84 yards of total offense at the break, while Stanford had racked up 331 yards. Oregon State had at least three false start penalties in the first half, something that has plagued OSU all year, called on tight ends Caleb Smith and Connor Hamlett and left tackle Sean Harlow.
