BASEBALL: Beavs knock off No. 9/10 Okie State

TRYING TO GET a handle on a baseball team early in the season can be difficult - last year's Oregon State squad started 4-2 before ripping off 15 wins on their next 16 games. This season's OSU team may be similarly hard to peg. After starting the season 2-2, Oregon State took out No. 9/10 Oklahoma State 5-3 on Thursday.

Logan Ice and Michael Gretler each drove in two runs in the win over Oklahoma State Thursday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. The Cowboys are ranked No. 9 by Baseball America, No. 10 by Collegiate Baseball.

K.J. Harrison added three hits – already his fourth multi-hit game of the season – as the Beavers got back on the winning side of things. The game marked the fifth straight for Oregon State in Arizona. The Beavers are scheduled for three more before leaving for home on Sunday.

Gretler, who got the start at third base, singled home runs in the second and third innings. He went 2-for-3 on the day.

Ice, meanwhile, came up one hit shy of tying his career-high with a 3-for-5 day at the plate in the win. He singled home a run in the third and doubled home another in the fifth. He singled again in the seventh before being retired on a fielder’s choice.

The first six batters in the Oregon State lineup, which also consisted of Jeff Hendrix, Joey Jansen, Billy King and Caleb Hamilton, combined to go 10-for-28 with four runs scored and three RBI.

Andrew Moore started for the Beavers and recorded his second quality start of the season. The junior picked up the win after scattering seven hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Moore was relieved by Drew Rasmussen, who worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. The Cowboys were retired in order in the eighth before Mitch Hickey came on to earn his first career save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out the side.

Oregon State continues play at the Big 12/Pac-12 Challenge Friday in taking on Kansas State in a 12 p.m. PT start (1 p.m. in Arizona). Live stats and audio can be found on osubeavers.com. Audio can also be heard on the Beaver Sports Network and TuneIn.
