Beavs' season opener moved to a Friday

OREGON STATE'S season opener has been moved up. The Gary Andersen era will officially begin Friday on Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. against the Weber State Wildcats, Beaver Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis announced Wednesday in a release. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5.

“Labor Day weekend is always tricky when it comes to playing a home game,” De Carolis said. “The more we looked at the date the more proactive we wanted to be and get the Gary Andersen era kicked off with the first college football game in the state for the 2015 season. We are eager to have Beaver Nation see Coach Andersen’s team and at the same time provide the opportunity for our fans to get their holiday weekend started early and take advantage of three full days.”

Season ticket renewals have been brisk for Coach Andersen’s inaugural season, running 38 percent higher compared to last year at this point. New season ticket deposits are currently being accepted at

The season opener will include the popular BeaverSalute for the second straight year offering free tickets to all active and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families. To take advantage of the BeaverSalute please call 800-Go-BEAVS or visit the Gill Coliseum ticket office during weekday business hours.

The opening game is the first-ever matchup between the two programs and will feature a pair of head coaches who are acquainted with each other. Weber State head coach Jay Hill and Andersen served as assistant coaches at Utah for several seasons, including Hill coaching the cornerbacks for Andersen while he was the Utes’ defensive coordinator. Hill was a student-athlete at Ricks Junior College in Idaho who was recruited to Utah by Andersen and is one of Utah’s top defensive backs in school history.

Correction: Oregon State begins spring practice Tues., March 3 and culminates with the annual Spring Game at Reser Stadium Sat., April 18 at 1 p.m. The Spring Game will air nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
