Beavs lose to ASU, Sunday game decides series

OREGON STATE jumped out to a 3-0 lead against No. 12 Arizona State but then the bats went cold. ASU scored three times over the final two innings, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth to set up the rubber game of the series on Sunday.

Reliever Sam Tweedt gave up the bases loaded single in the ninth, with the loss going to Zack Reser, who allowed just the one unearned run.

The loss dropped the Beavers' record to 15-4 and 1-1 in Pac-12 play. ASU is now 11-6 overall and also 1-1 in conference play.

The Beavers got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after one when Gabe Clark doubled home K.J. Harrison, who had been running on the play.

OSU advanced the lead to 3-0 when Logan Ice and Jeff Hendrix posted run-scoring singles in the second inning. The Sun Devils, however, answered back in the bottom half of the inning when David Greer singled in Trever Allen from third. Oregon State starter Drew Rasmussen, however, forced ASU into a flyout and double play to get out of the jam.

It remained a two-run Oregon State lead until the eighth when Arizona State, on RBI's from Joey Bielek and Brian Serven, tied the game. Reser, the Beavers’ fifth reliever of the night, was able to induce a fly ball to left to end the inning.

Rasmussen did not figure in the decision in the third start of his career, and first against Pac-12 competition. The freshman worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and a run with three strikeouts.

The teams complete the series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. PT first pitch at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The game will air live on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Arizona. Fans outside those regions can catch the game via Pac-12.com or the Pac-12 Now App.

Sunday's game can also be heard live on the Beaver Sports Network and TuneIn.
