Baseball: Beavs knock off Arizona

ANDREW MOORE went the distance on Friday, holding Arizona to five hits and a run in a complete-game effort and Logan Ice’s fourth-inning RBI proved to be the game winner as Oregon State opened a three-game series against Arizona with a 3-1 victory Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Arizona came into the series as the Pac-12 Conference’s top hitting team with a .324 team batting average. But Moore held the lineup to a .161 average for the game and was dominant in his first complete game of the season and fourth of his career.

His lone blemish on the night came on a run-scoring single by Riley Moore in the fourth. That tied the game in the fourth, but only for a short while. Oregon State (24-11, 7-6 Pac-12) got that run right back.

In the home half of the inning, Ice took a 3-2 pitch from Arizona (23-12 overall, 8-8 Pac-12) starter Cody Hamlin and hit it down the right field line for his fifth double of the season. It enabled Elliott Cary, who was running on the pitch, to score easily from first.

The double enabled Moore to roll to the victory, which pushed his record to 4-1 this season. Three of his five hits allowed came over the last four innings of the game, but only once did the Wildcats push runners into scoring position over that stretch. With runners on second and third, Moore froze Michael Hoard looking at strike three to end the jam.

Trever Morrison had two hits to pace the Beavers (24-11, 7-6), who started the game’s scoring in the first when Jeff Hendrix, batting in the fourth spot of the lineup, singled home Morrison from third.

The teams continue the series Saturday at Goss Stadium. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m. PT. Catch the game live via the Beaver Sports Radio Network and TuneIn application. Live stats and video can be found at
