Pac-10 Notes

Some notes you know, some notes you don't. A selection of Pac-10 tidbits before the 2003 campaign begins.

  • The Pac-10's first game features the California Golden Bears squaring off against the fifth ranked Kansas State Wildcats in the BCA Classic.
  • The first two weeks of the season see the Pac-10 facing three road games against Top 10 competition: California at No. 6 Kansas State, USC at No. 5 Auburn, and Washington at No. 2 Ohio State.
  • The Pac-10 has six bowl game arrangements this year: the Rose Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, the Sun Bowl, the Insight Bowl, the Las Vegas Bowl and the Silicon Valley Classic.
  • This year ABC will televise 14 Pac-10 games, Fox Sports will air 12 and TBS will air six.
  • Three Pac-10 teams are ranked in the Top 25 (USC, Arizona State, and Washington). A total of eight Pac-10 teams receive some sort of poll support.
  • The media poll has correctly selected the Pac-10 champion 20 of 42 times, including the last four out of five years.
  • USC was selected as the Pac-10 champ by the media. The last time this was the case was in 1996 when the Trojans finished fifth.
  • Oregon State was selected to finish anywhere from fourth to ninth by media personnel.
  • The last two years the team picked to finish last in the conference posted winning records. (Washington State in 2001 and California in 2002)
  • Six different teams have been the pre-season favorite the last six years. Five different teams have won the Pac-10 title in the last five years and seven different teams have won the title over the last eight years.
  • The Pac-10 is 84-34 (.712) out of conference the last three years. They were 32-15 (.681) last year.
  • The Pac-10 sent seven teams to bowl games last year. USC and UCLA were the only teams that won.
  • The Pac-10 had 32 first round picks in the 2003 NFL draft.
