Gus Lavaka, a freshman offensive lineman for the Beavers earned his second Freshman All-American award of the season. Pro Football Focus announced their Freshman All-American team on Monday.
Lavaka signed with Oregon State in Feburary 2016. The Kearns, Utah product originally signed with Hawaii in 2012, but served a two year LDS mission to Tonga and signed with Oregon State upon his return.
He came in for an injured Fred Lauina during game four, and went on to start seven of the final eight games for the Beavers.
Pro Football Focus also selected Stanford offensive guard Nate Herbig for the honor.
“Two monster Pac-12 guards led the way among true freshmen this season as Lavaka graded at 73.7 overall and Herbig came in at 70.8. Lavaka allowed only four pressures, all hurries, while ranking third among all freshman guards with a 73.7 run block grade while Herbig allowed only a sack and three hurries after taking over as starter in Week 7.”
Lavaka was also named a Freshman All-American last week by Campus Insiders, while fellow Beaver Xavier Crawford, a redshirt freshman at cornerback, has collected similar accolades from Campus Insiders and USA Today.
