Decoud invited to NFL Combine

The NFL Combine just got more exciting for Beaver fans as former Oregon State cornerback Treston Decoud announced that he has been invited to the 2017 Combine in Indianapolis.

Fresh off his invitation to the 92nd annual East West Shrine Game, Treston Decoud is getting another opportunity to showcase his talents. The standout Beavers corner announced on his Twitter account Friday that he had been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Decoud also posted his excitement with the following message:

Getting this opportunity is huge for Decoud as he attempts to prove that he is one of the better corners in the upcoming draft. Unfortunately, Oregon State gets less media exposure than places like West Virginia or Alabama, so he has to work that much harder. At least there is a precedent for OSU defenders making waves at the Combine and improving their visibility.

Steven Nelson posted the best bench press numbers for the defensive backs during the 2015 Combine (19 reps) and gained more attention from Mike Mayock and Charles Davis, who lovingly called him “Mighty Mouse”. He was drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs. Back in 2011, Stephen Paea broke the bench press record for defensive linemen (49 reps) and became a second round draft pick of the Chicago Bears. Even Jordan Poyer had the best 60-yard shuttle time of the defensive backs in the 2013 Combine (11.51 seconds) and was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now, there isn’t a direct correlation between bench press numbers and draft status, but these performances definitely helped some lesser known players gain some much-needed attention heading into draft season. Decoud is a slightly higher profile player based on his stellar senior season, but he could still use some publicity. The Combine is the perfect platform for him to continue a strong offseason and impress the coaching staffs. Plus, the interviews on Saturday are almost more important than the drills simply because Decoud can impress each coach on a face-to-face basis.

The NFL Scouting Combine runs from February 28th through March 6th, 2017. Decoud will take part in the bench press test that Sunday and will run on-field drills on Monday. BeaverBlitz will be watching his performance and reporting all the important details.
