Spring 17: Day 7 Andersen mixes it up

Coach Gary Andersen threw a curve ball at the team, cancelling practice on Tuesday, but scheduling one on Wednesday instead. BeaverBlitz breaks down the action.

Willis draws praise:

Since arriving on campus, Jonathan Willis has held many roles on the defensive side of the ball. One week he would play inside backer, the next he would shift to the outside.

Throughout his career, WIllis has accumulated 88 tackles and two sacks, in 22 appearances (four starts).

Going into his redshirt junior season, Willis has become one of the team’s better defensive players and drew high praise from his head coach for his work during spring camp.

“Right now (Willis) has proved to be one of the best 11 defenders we have,” Andersen said. "We are going to find a spot to get him on the field.”

Young players to scrimmage:

Saturday’s scrimmage will be a shorter scrimmage, roughly 60-70 plays rather than the 100-play scrimmage the team would have had in the past.

“I don’t think this team needs 100 plays,” Andersen said.“That’s what’s best for the offense and defensive lines.”

With the shorter scrimmage, Andersen is electing to hold out several of the upperclassmen, allowing younger, less experienced players to get a bulk of the reps. Manase Hungalu and Brandon Arnold will all be held out on the defensive side of the ball.

“(Hungalu) doesn’t need those reps,” Andersen said. “But the younger guys do.”

Not surprising, but Andersen will also hold out his top two running backs, Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce, from the scrimmage, allowing Jaylynn Bailey, Kieran Yancy and Marcus Greaves opportunities to carry the rock.

“I’m excited to see the younger backs," Andersen said. “Pierce and Nall don’t need to get tackled on Saturday, we will wait until the fall to tackle those guys.”

Luton did not practice:

Jake Luton was dressed for practice, but did not take any snaps during the portion of practice open to the media. Luton is in the mix for the starting quarterback job.

Although he didn’t practice, Andersen expects him to be good to go for Saturday’s scrimmage.

“He should be fine,” Andersen said. “I expect him to be fine.”

Biggest play:

Marcus McMaryion found freshman Isaiah Hodgins on a deep ball for roughly 30 yards. The 6-foot-4 Hodgins out-jumped the smaller Xavier Crawford to come down with the ball.
