On the Rise: 5 Defensive Players to Watch

Saturday the Beavers finish off the spring season with the annual spring game. Here are five players to watch on defense that may not be on your radar.

Spring football is always a great time for younger players or those who don't see a lot of action during the season to show what they can do.  This spring is no exception and BeaverBlitz wants to breakdown five defensive players for you to watch during Saturday's Spring Game that you may not have had on your radar.

Grant, a true freshman a year ago had a season ending injury that kept him from the field.  He is back this spring, and although doesn't have a long football career under his belt, has athleticism and a knack for finding the ball.  This spring he  has been all over the field knocking down balls and intercepting passes.  He is definitely a player to watch on Saturday and could very well be a contributor this fall.

If there is one player that we have heard Coach Andersen mention time and time again this spring, it is Taumoelau.  After spending last year on the scout team redshirting, Taumoelau has been a standout this spring.  He's put on weight and has a great burst.

The highly touted four-star recruit redshirted last season while gaining clearance from the NCAA. Fans and coaches alike have anticipated his arrival on the field and this spring his head to head battles with freshman Isaiah Hodgins were entertaining.  Those two will push each other and make each other better for years to come.

While not a youngster, Payne was expected to be a force last season, and really didn't live up to the hype.  This year coaches have talked up Payne as someone who buckled down and learned the Beavers defense.  Expectations are still high that he becomes a major contributor this fall.

With so many freshmen seeing action last fall on defense, Rashed was able to spend the year redshirting and adding weight.  This year he checked in at 6-foot-4, 233 pounds and he still has his explosion.  Definitely keep an eye out for Rashed on Saturday.
