No offensive player had as big of a spring than senior Hunter Jarmon. After battling injury much of his junior year, Jarmon is fully healthy and was able to participate in spring camp in its entirety this year. Throughout camp, Jarmon was one of the quarterbacks favorite targets and he had an impressive performance in the spring game as well.
Offensive linemen rarely see any glory. In fact, they are doing their best work when you hear nothing about them. Sumner Houston made the move to center from defensive line in December and has been working with the first team ever since. It has been a steep learning curve, but Houston has been up for the challenge. His snaps on Saturday appeared smooth.
Hodgins has been at Oregon State for less than three months. Natural gifted ability and hard work are paying off for the true freshman, who started Oregon State six months earlier than his peers in the 2017 class. Watching him throughout spring camp, it was clear why he was such a coveted recruit. Athleticism and focus are two of his best attributes. He is definitely an athlete who has lived up to his recruiting hype, and a player who we expect to see playing on Saturday this fall.
Quarterback Marcus McMaryion refuses to go down without a fight. When the Beavers signed junior college transfer Jake Luton it looked like he may be the one to beat. Sure Luton has a big arm, but McMaryion continues to show moxie. While Luton may have a bigger arm, McMaryion brings more agility to the position that was put on display during the Spring Game where he rushed three times for 27 yards. While the starting quarterback has yet to be named, McMaryion showed during the spring that he is still very much in the battle.
Senior Xavier Hawkins has been a role player during his time in Corvallis, but this spring, with fewer wide receivers ready for action he saw his chance to shine. Hawkins was a big contributor during scrimmages this spring including a big run on a fly sweep in the Spring Game, that went 39 yards. While he may still be a role player this fall, he definitely had a great audition for new wide receiver coach Jason Phillips this spring.
