Spring Recruiting Primer: Linebackers

Oregon State will graduate two linebackers this year, so the search to replace them is on. Who has caught the coaches eye early in the recruiting process?

Spring evaluation period begins on April 15 and runs through May.  This is a chance for the coaches to hit the road and watch prospects perform on the field, both with their high school teammates and at camps and combines held throughout the country.  With the Beavers own spring practice in the books, the staff is able to be completely organized when they hit the road.

Over this week, we will be listing the players with early offers and those to watch who could see their Oregon State interest increase.  In a 3-4 defense, linebackers are very important in both run support and pass rush. In fact the line between outside linebacker and defensive end is becoming more and more blurred.

With the numbers the way they are, expect the Beavers to sign three linebackers in this recruiting class.

W. Payne Soesman Smith Rashed Ah Hoy
Hungalu Ugwoegbu Hughes-Murray Taumoelau Robinson
Willis Robinett Whetzel

Offers: Boston College, BYU, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oregon State, San Jose St, UCLA, WSU

BeaverBlitz Notes: Hughes was originally planning to visit Oregon State for their Junior Day, but had a last minute change of plans. He told BeaverBlitz that he still hopes to visit Corvallis and see what OSU has to offer.

Offers: Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Oregon State

BeaverBlitz Notes: Is there a player in 2018 better suited for the orange and black than Beaver?  In early March he named a top four, which included Oregon State.  Miami has been his childhood favorite team, but Oregon State is still in the mix for this talented outside linebacker.

Offers: FAU, FSU, Illinois, Indiana, Oregon State, South Florida, Syracuse, UCF

BeaverBlitz Notes: Once again Coach Lockette's connections are helping the Beavers.  South Florida linebacker Patrick Joyner is on the Beavers early radar and OSU is hoping that the early offer will result in a visit down the road.

Offers: Cal, Oregon State, UNLV, Vanderbilt, Washington State

BeaverBlitz Notes: Mauga plans to take his recruitment slow and take his visits, which for Hawaiian preps are usually later in the fall.  Although he has three PAC 12 offers, the rest of the conference is keeping in touch with the 6-foot-1, 205 prospect.

Offers: Oregon State

BeaverBlitz Notes: Savea picked up an early Beaver offer from Coach Chad and the Beavers could be in good position to land the hard hitting linebacker from Kapolei.

Offers: Oregon State, Vanderbilt

BeaverBlitz Notes: Fatilua's recruitment has been fairly quiet, but that could change quickly during the spring evaluation period.

Offers: Boise, BYU, Cal, Colorado St, Fresno, Oregon State, Oregon, Utah, Utah State

BeaverBlitz Notes: Tafisi has a handful of strong offers from across the West Coast.  He has kept his recruitment close to the vest, but we are hoping to have an update this spring.

Offers: Boise, Colorado, Fresno, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon State, San Jose St, Utah St, WSU, Wyoming

BeaverBlitz Notes: Djibril attends Los Angeles (Calif) Cathedral and is teammates with Beaver signees Jeffrey Manning and Arex Flemings.  At 6-foot-1, 190, Djibril has good size and a frame to add weight.  Definitely a player on the BeaverBlitz board.
