Houston Receiver Plans Oregon State Visit

Coach Jason Phillips is making his mark early for the Beavers on the recruiting trail. BeaverBlitz catches up with La Marque, Texas wide receiver Ja'Kori Morgan.

When Jason Phillips was brought onto Gary Andersen’s staff, it was primarily for two reasons. The first being his familiarity with the "Air Raid" offense and how certain aspects of it could be incorporated with what the Beavers’ offense already does. Secondly, his ties to Texas, specifically the greater Houston metropolitan area, were vital in getting a presence for OSU in those fertile recruiting grounds.

His presence on the staff paid off immediately last cycle as the Beavers gained commitments from two running backs. Already for the 2018 cycle, a number of offers have been extended to athletes from Texas and many of them are listening to Coach Phillip’s pitch.

Ja'Kori Morgan is one of those athletes. The 6-foot-2 receiver from Clear Lake High School in Houston, picked up an offer from Oregon State towards the later part of February and has been in touch with Coach Phillips weekly ever since.

“Oregon State is definitely in the picture. Coach Phillips has been a big part about that. We just spoke about a week ago and we’re in the process of setting up an official visit up there. He’s going to be down here soon to watch one of my spring practices,” Morgan told BeaverBlitz.

The relationship between Morgan and Phillips isn’t the only connection to the Beavers’ program for the Houston native. He has ties to another Houston native that donned the Orange & Black and is looking forward to speaking with him about his time in Corvallis.

“One of my cousins’ best friends actually played up there, Kendall Hill. I plan on getting ahold of him soon to get his thoughts on his experiences at Oregon State, to see if they match up with everything I’ve already heard about it. From my cousin though I’ve heard that Kendall really liked it up there.”

Having garnered offers from Army, Houston, Kansas State, McNeese State, Texas State and UNLV in addition to the Beavers, a top group has emerged for Ja’kori and a commitment could be on the horizon.

“Right now, U of H, Oregon State and Kansas State are standing out. I’m debating on when I want to make my commitment. It’s between either making it before my senior season begins or after it ends. I do want to take my official visits whether I’ve made a commitment or not and OSU is one place where I definitely want to take an official visit.”

Last season, Morgan was Clear Lake’s leading receiver hauling in 42 passes for nearly 800 yards and 6 touchdowns.
