The roster moves are coming fast and furious!
Shortly after Dustin Stanton, Devin Chappell, and Victor Bolden all signed free agent contracts with NFL teams, Ricky Ortiz joined the mix. The avocado farmer is heading to Baltimore on a free agent contract.
This move comes as a little bit of a surprise considering that Ortiz was supposed to join the Falcons for offseason OTA’s. The Falcons love using fullbacks to lead the way for Devonta Freeman, and the loss of Patrick DiMarco creates quite a gap on the roster. Sure, Ortiz had visited with other teams leading up to the draft, but all signs pointed to Atlanta leading the chase.
Of course, joining the Ravens offense could work out quite well for Ortiz. One reason is that John Harbaugh heavily used Pro Bowl fullback Vontae Leach back in 2012 when Baltimore defeated San Francisco and won Super Bowl XLVII. Leach led the way for Ray Rice as the rushing attack provided balance for Joe Flacco and the receivers.
The other reason why this move could work out is that the Ravens rushing attack has struggled in the past few years. Javorius Allen, Kenneth Dixon, and Danny Woodhead are all solid players, but they need a big body to pave the way and create actual running lanes. Ortiz can do just that, and he will also serve as a secondary receiving option out of the backfield.
The NFL offseason continues over the next few months. Will Gavin Andrews find a spot?
