Offense impressive in first scrimmage

The first team offense moved the ball with ease in Oregon State's first official scrimmage Tuesday as senior Derek Anderson completed 4 of 7 passes for 63 yards including a 13-yard touchdown to sophomore tight end Joe Newton.

Anderson played just the first series spreading the ball out to four different receivers on the drive. Redshirt freshman Anthony Wheat-Brown caught a 25-yarder, senior Mike Hass added a 14-yard pick up, junior Josh Hawkins caught a 11-yard pass, while Newton added the 13-yard touchdown.

"Derek came out and looked crisp," head coach Mike Riley said. "Putting that first unit offensive group together, that's where most of our new faces are coming from on our team, so it's paramount that we get that thing feeling efficient."

Wheat-Brown
Wheat-Brown lead all receivers with six catches for 67 yards.

The reserves took over after that as senior Adam Rothenfluh passed for 108 yards on 6 of 17 passing including an 11-yard touchdown to Hawkins. Redshirt freshman Ryan Gunderson completed 8 of 12 for 89 yards while true freshman Brian Hildebrand added 30 yards on 3 of 8 passing.

The receivers as a unit looked sharp especially junior college transfer Marcel Love who made a team high six receptions for 67 yards. Wheat-Brown finished with four catches for 64 yards. Hawkins, senior George Gillett, and senior Cole Clasen added two catches a peice.

"I'm encouraged," Riley said about the wide receivers play on Tuesday. "I know better than to think it's solved, because you only solve it once you start producing in games. But I do feel better about what we see right now."

The battle for the starting running back role continued as Ryan Cole picked up two touchdowns, including an 11-yard run, in a seven attempt 39-yard performace. Senior Dwight Wright added 18 yards on 11 attempts while redshirt freshman Yvenson Bernard added 17 yards on five attempts.

"Nobody has separated; I don't know that we need that," Riley said. "I know we need certain strengths - we need somebody who can for sure play on third down and catch the ball and pass protect, then we need good runners on first and second down, primarily. We need the production."

Place kickers Alexis Serena and John Daily each made their extra point attempts with Serena adding a 33-yard field goal.
