Sleeper recruit tearing up the field

Safety Corey Watkins of Cordova High has been impressive in his first five games this season grabbing 72 tackles and five interceptions. Watkins is flying under the recruiting radar right now, but not for long.

Watkins is a dominating force in the Sierra Valley Conference and his season has been one to remember.  He is averaging 14.4 tackles and one interception per game and has gathered 160 yards on five interceptions.  His tackle total so far is an eye-popping 72.  With his outstanding performance this season look for recruiting attention to pick up as schools start sliding him to the top of their list.

In his most recent game vs. Galt, the entire Galt offense was directed away from him. There was only one ball thrown to his man the entire game, which he intercepted.  Watkins one interception was a big one too as he intercepted a pass in double overtime that won the game for the Lancers.  Despite not being thrown against the majority of the game he still managed 19 tackles. Corey has a great nose for the ball and is already adept at disguising coverages and managing the defense on the field for Coach Max Miller.

Corey spent much of the summer watching game film of the returning quarterbacks he would be facing during this season.  "He is a student of the game," stated his uncle. Corey is also a student in the class room carrying a 3.8 GPA. He is scheduled to take his SAT on Nov. 5th.

Corey's recruiting activity, or inactivity as it stands thus far, is a result of not having anyone guide him on the right direction as far as taking the steps to get the attention. He was not counseled in the importance of the Nike camps and is traveling under the radar as a result.

Look for the action on this young man to spring up as the season progresses, and as he continues to break school records (career int's, longest streak of games with an int, highest tackle per game avg.)
