Wide receiver Chad Johnson was selected in the second round during the 2001 draft, linebacker James Allen was selected in the third round of the 2002 draft, while Nick Barnett and Steven Jackson were selected in the first round of the 2003 and 2004 drafts, respectively.
In OSU’s 111-years of playing football, 129 Beaver football players have been drafted to the National Football League. The most players Oregon State has had drafted was six in 1967. Two years (1969, 1946) five players have been selected, while four players have been drafted 11 times. (2004, 2001, 1975, 1972, 1970, 1965, 1952, 1950, 1944, 1943, 1941). The Beavers have had no players drafted only ten times since the drafts inception in 1936.
A clear sign that Oregon State is producing better football players is the number of players that have been drafted since the turn of the century, 12. During the nineties, the NFL drafted just eight players. The last time zero Beaver players got drafted was in 2000, but four players signed free agent contracts. The last time zero players got drafted or signed free agent contracts was in 1995.
While some of the hoopla has died down, the real excitement for Beaver fans will begin Sunday as the later rounds get underway. Derek Anderson, Brandon Browner, Mitch Meeuwsen and Bill Swancutt should all get selected.
