Jonathon Smith Staying in Corvallis

Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathon Smith has been named Offensive Graduate Assistant for the 2002 season.

Head Coach Dennis Erickson had hinted that Smith would not be gone for long, but it was not official that the Pac-10's third leading passer of all-time would remain until now. Smith has repeatedly expressed interest in a coaching career after his playing days.

It is expected that one of Smith's biggest responsibilities will be to aid in the development of quarterback Derek Anderson, who will be a sophomore this coming season.

While Smith has never been the most athletically gifted quarterback, listed at 5'10" 200 pounds, he has been touted by Erickson and others for being one of the most intelligent quarterbacks in college football. His mind will be a welcome addition to an already solid coaching staff.
