Junior To Watch: Cali RB Andy Avila

Orange County is always home to several talented running backs every year and one to watch in next year's class is Santa Ana's (Calif.) Calvary Chapel Andy Avila. Avila has put up big numbers the last two seasons and will be one of the top backs on the West Coast.

At 5-10, 173 pounds, Avila is a big time speed guy who clocked a 4.47 in the 40 and a 4.17 in th shuttle at the Nike Camp in Sn Diego as a sophomore last year. He also jumped 32 inches in the vertical and looked very good in the running back drills.

Avila is a two time All-CIF selection and had a nice junior year rushing for 1,414 yards on 161 carries and 10 touchdowns. He totaled over 2,200 all-purpose yards and added three kick returns for scores.

Despite his talent at running back, Avila would actually prefer to play defense in college. With his size, quickness and speed, that may not be a bad idea as he has the potential to be an outstanding cover corner in college.

On the recruiting front, Avila is hearing from most of the Pac 10 as well as Illinois, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Syracuse, Boston College, Northwestern and Wisconsin.

"Oregon is my top school followed by Wisconsin, Illinois, UCLA and Stanford," Avila said. "I would like to major in Medical/Sciences and that could play a role in my decision. I just want a chance to play college football, it's always a goal of mine."

Avila will attend the Nike Camp in Los Angeles but isn't sure about the rest of his summer camp plans. Academically, he's carrying a 3.5 GPA and will take the SAT later in the year.
