DE looking to make early call

SOME PROSPECTIVE RECRUITS want to go through the year, and then some, before deciding on a college. Others, like California defensive end Marquez Herrod, want to make their decision now, before the curtain goes up on their senior season. The Escondido, Calif., star holds eight offers, including one from Oregon State and appears poised to make his selection in the next two weeks or so.

Herrod (6-3, 225) holds offers from Oregon State, Washington State, Utah, Arizona, Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and UTEP, with Oregon, ASU and UCLA possibly close to offering. The Beavers, Utes and Bulldogs are recruiting the hardest for the star.

Herrod said all are recruiting him as a defensive end, and there are two schools who have a slight edge headed into what could be the final stages of his recruitment.

"Probably Utah and Oregon State," said Herrod. "Utah is the No. 4 team in the nation. That speaks for itself. Oregon State because its not too far from California. Oregon State definitely sounds like a good route. But I want to meet the coaches and check out the school first."

The book on the San Pascual High playmaker is that he's a quick, athletic defensive end with an exceptional work ethic both on and off the field. He's hoping to get out to both Utah and Oregon State in the next two weeks.

"I'm going to try and do it this weekend but if not, hopefully next weekend," he said. "I've never been to (the state of) Oregon, and I don't know the coaches. I'd like to see if it's a nice fit for me before I make my decision."

His prep coaches and his mom will have the most influence on his decision, with Herrod saying if he stays in-state, it will be in order to stay close to her.

"Pretty much the only person I'd stay back for would be my mom," said Herrod.

One thing he does know is when he wants to make a decision – soon.

"I'm definitely going to make an early decision," said Herrod. "I just need to get out there and see these schools and meet their coaching staffs, see what the campus is like, the facilities."

Last season, Herrod had 58 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 4 hurries, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and blocked a punt.
