Since, Ritchie McKay left for New Mexico, there have been a number of candidates that have been mentioned to replace him. We are hearing that Oregon State Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart has cut the list down to three candidates. Bobby Braswell, Bob Thomason, Jay John, and Seth Greenberg. Mike Dunlap and Dean Demopoulos were also being considered for the slot, but reports are that Barnhart has crossed them off his list.
Braswell has been the head coach at Cal State Northridge for six seasons. He also coached at Oregon under Jerry Green before that. He has a career record of 97-79. He reportedly has already interviewed with Barnhart. Braswell has refused comment throughout the search, so it is not known how interested he is in the opening. Thomason is in his 14th year as head coach at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He has a career record of 202-175. Before taking his job at his alma mater, Thomason coached at Stanislaus State and Columbia College. Thomason also was said to have interviewed last week. Jay has been an assistant at Arizona under Lute Olson for the past four seasons. Before his stint at Arizona, Jay was an assistant at Oregon under Ernie Kent. Jay also spent eight years as an assistant at Butler University. The Oregonian reported that Jay and his wife were in Corvallis Friday and Saturday to interview for the position. Greenberg has been at South Florida for six years as has brought the Bulls back to respectability, including an NIT berth this year. Before moving to Tampa, Greenberg was the head coach at Long Beach State and has recruiting ties to the west coast, which is a priority for Barnhart in this search. Dunlap coached the Metro State (Colorado) Roadrunners to the Division II championship in two of the last three seasons. In five seasons at Metro State he has compiled a 138-28 record. Dunlap has a wide variety of coaching experience, including a stint as an assistant at USC. Barnhart had conversations with Dunlap last week. Click here for more information on Mike Dunlap.
Demopoulos is in his first year as an assistant with the NBA's Seattle Sonics. Before getting hired in Seattle, Demopoulos spent 17 seasons as an assistant under John Chaney at Temple. The Oregonian reported that Demopoulos interviewed with Barnhart earlier this week. Barnhart has been speaking with Gary Payton throughout the interview process and it is possible that Payton gave Demopolous a strong recommendation. Barnhart may have been just trying to please Payton. Payton, along with Sonics teammate Brent Barry played collegiate basketball at Oregon State. Click here for more information on Dean Demopoulos.
