Linebacker U after tackling machine

OREGON STATE is in line for an official visit from Dwight Roberson, a fast 'backer out of Ventura, Calif., who's racked up 225 tackles and counting during the course of his junior and senior years. The Beavs are tied at the top for Roberson, who says the Oregon State defense would be a fine fit.

"Their defense performs like I perform," said Roberson. "And I've heard good things about the atmosphere. I'll most likely take a visit up there in January."

Besides Oregon State, Roberson (6-1, 215) holds offers from Boston College and Colorado State. His Top Four consists of Oregon State, UCLA, Cal and Boston College. Distance could be a factor, as Roberson said he likes the idea of playing close to home at nearby UCLA.

Colorado, UNLV and Washington State are among those he's also been hearing from over the past month. UCLA and Washington State have talked to him about playing strong safety, while the rest of the schools, including Oregon State, see him at linebacker.

Roberson has played defensive end, middle linebacker and outside 'backer over the course of his high school career at St. Bonaventure.

At the next level, Roberson said he's looking for a school much like St Bonaventure in many respects -- where he'll have a relationship with the coaches that will last after his playing days are done.

"Coaches that actually care, on and off the field," he said.

Roberson also said his parents will be key factors in his decision.

THE BOOK ON Roberson: nose for the the football, a sure tackler and a ton of speed. As a junior, he anchored St. Bonaventure's All-CIF 4x100 relay team, and competed in the state meet's 100-m and long jump.

Through eight game this season, Roberson has racked up 61 tackles with three sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles -- one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also has a punt block and two interceptions, also returning one for a score for the undefeated Seraphs. Last weekend, St. Bonaventure won its 18th straight game and 89th in 92 games. St. Bonaventure this Friday heads into the big showdown against also undefeated Ventura.

As a junior, Roberson tallied an eye popping 174 tackles from the middle linebacker spot. He is playing outside linebacker this season.
