RECRUITING: Beavs land coveted defensive end

OREGON STATE landed a highly sought defensive end prospect this week in Marquez Herrod. The 6-3, 220 pounder out of Escondido, Calif., held double digit offers, choosing Oregon State over most of the Pac-10 and others including Fresno State and Utah. The newest member of the Beaver family talks about the OSU coaches, what it was about Oregon State that made it the place for him, his academic situation and more.

It was looking like Fresno State might hold the upper hand for a while there but ultimately, the coaches and program at Oregon State won Herrod over.

"I love the coaches, the coaching staff is amazing," said Herrod. "They really showed me a great family atmosphere and a place where I felt like I'd be taken care of."

Herrod gave his verbal commitment to coach Mike Riley Monday.

"He was happy," said Herrod. "The first thing he said was, 'Give me a hug.'"

Cal, USC and UCLA were the only Pac-10 schools not to offer Herrod.

"I'm just happy to be going there," said Herrod of Oregon State. "I love the town, the people and look forward to the next four to five years."

THE BOOK ON the San Pascual High playmaker: A quick, athletic defensive end with an exceptional work ethic both on and off the field. Academically, Herrod says he's in great shape, having achieved a qualifying score on the SAT.

Entering tonight's semi-final game against Oceanside, Herrod has racked up six sacks and 14 tackles-for-loss among his 42 sticks, five hurries and blocked three kicks on the year.

As a junior, Herrod notched 58 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 4 hurries, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and blocked a punt.

Herrod becomes the 15th** known verbal commitment in the OSU class of 2006, joining DL Alex Fa'agai, P/K Kyle Loomis, TE John Reese, DE Keith Robertson, TE/HB/WR Joe Halahuni OL Mau Nomani, DE Dorian Smith, DT Joel White-Frisbee, OL/DL Alex Linnenkohl, DT Mitchel Hunt, TE Howard Croom, WR Casey Kjos, LB Alfred Rowe and OL Ryan Pohl. **Oregon State also has a soft verbal in S/WR James Dockery.
