Linebacker U still looking at Cal LB?

WITH RECENT ADDITIONS Tom Hansen and Joey LaRocque, Linebacker U has six known verbal commitments listed at the 'backer position. Another with an Oregon State offer is middle linebacker prospect Travis Goethel, who put in a strong practice week at the Cali-Florida Bowl. But with six 'backers in the fold, the question is if the Beavs are still in on the 6-foot-3, 215 pound 'backer out of Vista High.

Goethel's top three these now includes Southern Cal along with Washington and Utah, with OSU no longer listed among the frontrunners. A dominant inside force out of Vista, Calif., Goethel said he was feeling UW, USC and Utah the most but wasn't ready to close the door on Oregon State.

"They're still in it," said Goethel.

About three weeks ago, Goethel's top three were Washington, Utah and Oregon State, and he knows a couple of current Beavers in Jake Harry and Sean Canfield.

But Oregon State may have also filled up at the linebacker spot in the 2006 class.

With six oral pledges at linebacker -- Tom Hansen, Joey LaRocque, Michael Sipili, Keaton Kristick, Marquez Herrod and Alfred Rowe -- the Beavs were not among the schools Goethel listed as hearing from recently: Washington, Utah, Colorado and Southern Cal.

USC has not offered but they have set up a visit for Goethel for Jan. 13, something that has caused Goethel to adjust his decision timetable.

In addition to UW, Utah, Colorado and OSU, Goethel has also received offers from San Diego State and UCLA.

ON THE SEASON, Goethel captured a slew of honors and accolades. He was the CIF Player of the Year in the San Diego Section, the Avocado League Defensive Player of the Year and named first team defense on the Union-Tribune San Diego Section team.

According to the Vista Press headed into the final game of his season, Goethel had racked up 73 tackles, 7 ½ sacks, five interceptions -- including two that were returned for touchdowns -- and three fumble recoveries, although some reports have his season tackle number as high as 155.
