NoCal NIKE camp update - David Lewis

David Lewis is a 6-0, 185-pound athlete from Spanaway (Wash.) Bethel, and while Lewis has been following his teammate, quarterback Johnny DuRocher, south for the past few Sundays, the trip they took this past weekend took them all the way down to Palo Alto, California to take in the NoCal NIKE camp.

"Well, basically I wanted to get some look with see where I stand with other athletes, see where I'm at, get a good look," Lewis told about his desire to compete at Stanford. Was it what he expected it to be? "Not really. The coaches, college coaches and everything, that was what I expected but I thought it might be a little bigger."

Due to a miscommunication, the all-state safety ended up working out on the other side of the ball. "I learned I went in the wrong group," he said. "I was supposed to go with the DB's, so coach (Eric Kurle) got a little angry with me because he told some people about me, but I went with the receivers and I learned a lot of stuff there. I'll be playing receiver a lot this year. How to get off the ball, how to increase my 40 time." His 4.55 time showed Lewis that he's got the requisite speed needed to be a D1 player.

At WR, he was able to run some routes for his teammate. "We hooked up on the first one-on-one," Lewis said of his time catching passes from DuRocher. "We blew it, but we got to hook up so it was fun. I don't know where he was from, but there was this one quarterback that threw a hitch to me and when I turned around it was right there! That was impressive. There were a lot of good players out there. I made a lot of friends."

Recruiting attention has been consistent for David. "LSU and Wazzu and Arizona the most," he said. "Oregon, Oregon State and some other Pac-10 schools, but those three are recruiting me the hardest." He has no offers so far.

And summer plans? "I'm thinking of going to the one (NIKE camp) in Eugene because I really had a fun time, and the one at Wazzu (team camp) and Oregon State," Lewis said. "LSU is too far."
