BREAKING NEWS: Beavs land lightning quick DT

OREGON STATE has received a verbal commitment from Scottsdale's Gerard Lee, a highly sought defensive tackle with a wicked first step. The 6-3, 274 pounder chose the black and orange over offers from Nebraska, Utah, South Florida and others.

Scottsdale assistant Mark Mejia confirmed Lee's oral pledge to the Beavs.

"I haven't talked to Gerard yet but he did commit, and I believe he did it on Thursday or Friday," said Mejia.

It came down to Oregon State and Utah in the end, with Mejia saying Lee liked the thought of playing the Pac-10 and staying out west among the deciding factors.

THE BOOK ON Lee and what made him a hot prospect: Serious quicks off the ball, and he plays with leverage.

"He's quicker off the snap than darned near everybody -- including the offensive linemen," says Mejia. "That initial step off the snap is how he's really able to create pressure."

Lee is on track to receive his AA degree in the spring, with apparently 2 to play 2 at the next level.
