Four star WR flosses secondaries

FOUR STAR WIDE RECEIVER Marcus Mathews figures to be among the more highly sought recruits in the class of 2007 to come out of the state of Oregon. The 6-4.5, 200 pound grabmaster out of Beaverton's Southridge High one day plans to enter the dental field but right now, he's busy formulating opinions on schools and setting spring and summer football plans.

Pop quiz. Who was the last 4-star rated wide receiver to come out of Oregon? More on that later.

The ink has barely dried on the '06 Letters of Intent, but early returns on the class of 2007 are already coming in. Mathews has heard from a number of schools, including Oregon, Boston College, BYU, Utah, Washington, Washington State and Portland State. But he hasn't yet seen anything from the Beavs in his mailbox.

"I haven't heard anything yet from Oregon State, Oregon has sent me letters and BYU has sent me a handwritten letter," said Mathews, with the most mail coming from Boston College.

Mathews, who is Mormon, said BYU is certainly one of his frontrunners although he remains open to everyone. Likely spring and summer travel plans include attending BYU's camp, with junior days at Utah, BYU and Oklahoma State.

"It's definitely going to be about academics," Mathews of where he chooses to go to school. "What I want to be is a dentist. And of course a school with a good atmosphere and good people...BYU showed a lot of interest in me when I went to their camp."

Mathews isn't necessarily a burner, legitimately timed at a 4.65 in the 40 meters but more important than some controlled dash sans pads, Mathews out on the gridiron just..makes..plays. And he's plenty fast, holding the school records at Southridge in the 100-m and 300-m hurdles (15.4 and 39.99, respectively) and was part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams who hold Southridge's top marks.

Greg Barton, who runs the Barton Football Academy, says of Mathews : "Tremendous athlete. Keep an eye on this kid as he has the tools to become special. The sky is the limit for Marcus."

Quiz answer
As for the last 4-star rated WR to come out of Oregon, there hasn't been one. Not since first covered the recruiting scene in 2001.

Here in February, schools are not yet allowed to place a phone call to a recruit. The first call, and only call, before September from a school to a PSA is allowed during the May evaluation period, (which actually begins in April.) Recruits are allowed to call a school at any time.
