Beavs eye Tucson lineman

OREGON STATE IS continuing to mine for gold in the desert. Four native Arizonans signed in the 2006 class -- Clinton Polk, Geoff Garner, Mitchel Hunt and Keaton Kristick -- and the Beaver coaching staff has extended a '07 scholarship offer to Kristofer O'Dowd, a massive 300 pound OL preparing for his senior campaign at Tucson's Salpointe Catholic High. Assistant coach Mike Cavanaugh is running point.

O'Dowd (6-5, 302) has had occasion to talk with a few coaches here in the early days of the recruiting season, including the Beavers' offensive line coach.

"He's a pretty cool guy," said O'Dowd of Cavanaugh. "He put everything on the table and really explained everything well. He said it was a unique experience there."

O'Dowd also spent some time with Mike Stoops when he attended Arizona's junior day, coaches Pat Ruel and Pete Carroll from USC had a conference call with the lineman a couple weeks ago and he's also talked with coach Connor at ASU.

Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, Nevada, Michigan State, Ohio State and Texas Tech have all offered. Besides USC, he's also seeing significant interest from Michigan and Miami.

O'Dowd said he has no favorites at this time and hasn't done enough research on schools to get a good feel for the various schools.

Important to his decision will be a school's academics, the relationship with the coaches and the tradition of the football program.

"First, comes academics," said O'Dowd. "I'm going to major in Pre-Dental so a dental school would be nice."

O'DOWD THIS WINTER has attacked the weight room six days a week, adding 20 pounds in the process.

"I've hit the weight room quite a bit this offseason and its been paying off," he said. "It's a good, solid 300 pounds."

Future plans include USC's junior day in April, and the Texas camp.

He was a first team All State selection by the Arizona Football Coaches Association, the only junior to make the first team. He also excels in the classroom, maintaining a 3.25 GPA.
