Chris Purtz Receives First Scholarship Offer

As we expected, the recruitment of Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West linebacker Chris Purtz has picked up considerably since his strong showing at the Nike Camp in Palo Alto last month. Purtz received his first scholarship offer and is hopeful a few more are on the way.

The 6-0, 212 pound linebacker was one of the top linebackers at the NorCal Nike Camp and he tested very well running a 4.53 in the 40, 4.14 in the shuttle, jumped 32 inches in the vertical and did 25 reps on the bench. He also stood out in the one on one drills and looked right at home dropping into coverage.

As for the recruiting attention, things are going pretty well right now for the talented linebacker.

"Recruiting definitely picked up for me after the Nike Camp and I finally got that first scholarship offer from Cal," Purtz said. "It's almost a perfect situation for me to come into and they have one of the best business schools in the country and that's what I want to do.

"A few others like Colorado, ASU and UCLA all called and said they might make an official offer pretty soon. I also talked to Coach Mazzone at Oregon State a while back and he said that their defensive coaches would be talking to me soon and making an offer then."

Purtz attended UCLA's one day camp last weekend where he had a strong showing but may not do any other camps over the summer as he'll be taking summer school in order to graduate a semester early as a senior.

"It's something I thought about a lot and it's something that I feel would be in my best interest," Purtz said. "The summer school classes will give me the extra credits I need and I'm set to fulfill all state and university admission requirements. That's a big reason I'll be making my college choice in the next month or so. That way I can just focus on school and football next year."

Along with Cal, Purtz said UCLA, USC and Colorado are others on his short list.
