Michael Okwo Update

The linebacker from Mahattan Beach Mira Costa, Michael Okwo, says he's still early in the recruiting process, but provides a list of his favorites at this point...

Michael Okwo, 6-0, 205, Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Mira Costa, hasn't been heard from that much this spring and early summer because he hasn't been seen since the Los Angeles Nike Camp. "Yeah, I didn't go to any camps lately," he said. " I went to the USC camp in April, then I was going to go to the UCLA camp, but I couldn't make it."

Not too much has changed on the recruiting front for Okwo. He said he doesn't have a clear-cut favorite at this point, but lists six schools that are among his favorites: UCLA, USC, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State and Boston College.

Boston College stands out on that list like a sore thumb. Why Boston College? "I like the Boston area. I have two older siblings who go to college on the east coast. One at Princeton and the other at Morehouse College in Atlanta. I don't know much about Boston College, the school, but I'm going to go out there later this month and check it out and see if it'd be a school for me."

Okwo also said he plans on visiting USC unofficially later in June. "They called my coach and invited me to campus, so I'm going to go down there June 25th."

Okwo said that UCLA was the first to offer him and even though that might not ultimately make an impact on his decision, he said it was a good reflection on the program. "It was flattering. No matter what, you have to think they were the first to see something in me."

UCLA, USC and Oregon State are the three schools that have offered Okwo to date.

Growing up in Southern California, Okwo said he didn't really have a favorite. "I only started playing football as a freshman," he said. "I didn't even watch football on TV, so I didn't really have a favorite team."

He said he and his parents don't have a preference for him stay on the west coast for college. "It doesn't matter to me. With the two siblings on the east coast already, my parents are used to it. Even though my dad wants to see as many of my games as possible. I think he's personally leaning toward Stanford, but I'll be able to make my own decision."

Okwo doesn't have any kind of timetable for making a decision. "I want to take my trips, all five if I can. What I'm looking for is a school I'll be able to enjoy for four years." Okwo said he has a 3.5 GPA and scored a 1210 on his SAT.
